- Evolved Office UC-One Evolve IP provides customers a mobile application to extend their unified communications (UC) experience. Users can perform the following: Instant Messaging, Group Chat, Phone and Calendar Presence, Video Calling, Audio Conferencing, Corporate Directory, VoIP Calling, Access to Call History and more.
- Cisco has the Unified Personal Communicator that will work with the Mac, but it requires Cisco Unified Presence. Your only option for a Mac softphone would be a 3rd party SIP client. I can't provide any guidance on that as I haven't tried to get a SIP softphone working with any express products. You would also likely lose some functionality.
Communicator Web Access (CWA)
The Office Communicator service can be accessed easily via a webpage. Ideal if you require to communicate with colleagues whilst away from your standard machine.
- To access Communicator Web Access, open a web browser and type in the following URL: https://im.thebusinessplatform.co.uk/
- NOTE: You must allow pop-ups for this site within your browser before you will be able to login.
- Enter your sign in details for Office Communicator as normal.
- This will open a separate browser window for Communicator Web Access as shown below. This functions in the same way as the full client version.
It will be nice to give Mac users an alternative to Communicator Web Access. Mac Messenger is a single client that supports both OCS 2007 and Windows Live Messenging. One client for both?! Avaya One-X Communicator is for Aura. Avaya Communicator is used for IP Office. Confusing, yes, maybe that's why the Communicator 3.0 is renamed to Equinox which has a MacOS version, guessing it will come down to IPO eventually. For Mac you have the old Avaya Video Softphone which is on the Admin CD under the Softphone directory. You are also able to use Office Communicator 2007 through mobile devices. To do this you will need to download and install the mobile client on your device. Access to the mobile client software is free from the Microsoft site mentioned in the below steps, however this is only compatible for certain mobile devices. Compatible devices are those running Windows Mobile 6.x, and Java enabled phones (certain Nokia and Motorola models only).

- To get Office Communicator on your mobile device, you will need to install the software first. To do this, open a browser on your mobile device and enter the following URL: http://www.getcomo.com.
- This will open a Microsoft webpage as shown below.
- Click on the relevant link to select the type of mobile device that you have and follow the steps from there.
Once you’ve installed the relevant client for your mobile device, you will need to read the below for the settings required to setup the client.
The configuration settings for the Communicator Mobile client for Windows Mobile are as follows:
- In the Sign-in address box, type your Communicator sign-in address.
- In the Domainusername box, type your domain name and user name in the specified format. This will be in the format of SSPusername and this can be found on the control panel in the Exchange mailbox screen for that particular user.
- In the Password box, type the password for your domain account.
- Select Remember password if you do not want to type your password every time you sign in to Communicator.
- Select Automatically sign me in to specify that Communicator Mobile automatically starts every time that you turn on your mobile device.
- Select Sign in as and then select the presence status that you want to display when you sign in. If you choose to automatically sign in to Communicator Mobile every time that you turn
- on the device, you can use this option to sign in as Away to avoid being called or sent an instant message by those contacts who have tagged you.
- Click Done (or OK on the Pocket PC).

Joining Microsoft Messenger is a new business counterpart in Office 2011 for Mac, Microsoft Communicator. Both products offer similar features and interfaces, but each is designed for a different market:
- Microsoft Messenger: Uses your Windows Live ID (such as your Hotmail e-mail address) to communicate with contacts using public servers. Requires a Windows Live account to sign in.
- Microsoft Communicator: Designed to use fully updated Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 or later to communicate within a closed business environment. The corporate contact list has been moved from Messenger to Communicator. Communicator supports Microsoft Exchange Global Address List (GAL).
Both Messenger and Communicator offer a variety of ways to communicate, collaborate, and share work. Logging in to either product involves a simple username and password sign-on.
Managing contacts in Microsoft Messenger and Communicator
The Contact List displays when you open Messenger or Communicator. Starting at the top, you have access to a lot of tools:
- Add: Displays the Add a Contact dialog.
- Send: Click the Send button and then choose a contact from the pop-up menu to open a text instant message conversation window.
- Call: This feature requires speakers and microphones on both ends of the call. Communicator supports PC to phone dialing.
- Video: This feature requires video camera, speaker, and microphones on both ends of the call.
- Send File: Click and then choose a contact from the pop-up menu. You see a file Open sheet, which you can use to choose a file or photo to send to the selected contact.
- Page: Click and then choose a contact from the pop-up menu. If you haven’t set up your mobile message preferences, the Preferences dialog opens. Normally, Page displays the Page message input window. Type a text message to be sent to your contact’s cellphone or mobile device.
- Mail: Opens your Web browser to view your mail account. Displays how many unread messages you have in your inbox.

The Presence Indicator is a new feature of Office 2011. It has these buttons across the bottom:
- Send Mail: Opens a new browser window to a new, blank, pre-addressed e-mail message window.
- Send Instant Message: Opens a conversation window and requests the contact to engage in a text chat session.
- Voice Call: Sends a request to establish a voice call. This feature requires speakers and microphones on both ends of the call. Communicator supports PC to Phone dialing.
- Video Call: Sends a request to establish a video call. This feature requires video camera, speaker, and microphones on both ends of the call.
- Schedule Meeting: Opens a new Meeting dialog in Outlook.
- Open Outlook Contact: Opens the Contact in Outlook.
- Add to Contact List: Adds this person to your Messenger or Communicator Contacts List.
- Phone Number: In Communicator, click to initiate a telephone call.
Instant messaging with Office 2011
When you choose to send an instant message, the Message Conversation dialog opens. The dialog lets you chat using text. You can also use the following features in the Message Conversation dialog:

- Save: Saves the dialog of your chat. Messenger only.
- History: Displays the Conversation History window. Messenger only.
- Open Drawer: Opens the side drawer and displays Contact pictures.
- Presence Indicator: Click to display the contact’s Presence Indicator.
- Close Drawer: Closes the side drawer.
- Input area: Type your message or drag a file into this section.
- Font: Click to change characteristics of the font you send.
Reviewing conversation history in Messenger and Communicator
When you click the History button or press Command-O in Messenger, the Conversation History dialog appears. You get the following options:
- Save as Web Page: Saves the selected conversation in HTML that can be opened in a Web browser.
- Print: Prints the conversation.
- Delete: Deletes selected conversation.
- Search: Find conversations using keyboards.
- Show/Hide toolbar: Click this little button when your toolbar disappears and you want it back.
